My friend went to Harvard for Summer term and got a D and a C on his subjects are those grades still good?

He went to harvard for summer term as a 10th grader and he got 'D' and a 'C' on his 2 subjects, he wants to know that should he list those grades for college credit on his college application or not?

Hi, I'm a student at Harvard.





It depends on where he is applying. If he is applying to Harvard, he should not list those grades. True, he was only in the 10th grade when he took the classes, but there are students who enroll in Harvard two years early - i.e. the 10th grade age - and ace their classes. While those grades may not necessarily be horrible, you should emphasize your strengths, not your weaknesses.





On the other hand, if he is applying to a lower tier school, then he can go both ways, because it shows that he can compete at a high level. But remember, colleges (even lower ranked ones) don't like to think of themselves as "worse" than other colleges. So a Harvard 'D' doesn't translate into another school's 'A' or 'B'.





In any case, I definitely would not list the D.

Reply:Depends, were the classes for high school? I mean, something that can actually show up on his transcripts? If so, that D and C, I'm sorry, isn't good, and especially depending on what subject they are in. Most colleges are interested in how much math, science, and English classes you have had, not to mention what kind they were also. Depending on what those grades were for, if it was something for high school, I would definitely try and retake them, but, you could also advise him to talk to a guidance counselor at school.
Reply:Your friend should contact the university that he is applying to to make sure. I would definitely ask because if he doesn't he may be rejected if they find out.

Was he taking AP classes? If so, the grades in the class don't matter but the AP exam grade does.





If he just took regular classes, no he should not list them. I would urge him to talk to his advisor and see if the classes counted for college credits. If so, I would advise him to retake them. If they did count as college credits there is no way of hiding it. His transcript will show the classes if he lists them or not. If only it were as easy as just not listing the classes and not having them count =)





So have your friend talk to his advisor if he has one, he or she will be able to explain more about the classes he took and what they count for. If he does not have an advisor, tell him to contact the school and ask to speak to one, explaining that he took classes there over the summer.





Even if the classes DID count, since he is only a sophomore in high school then he will have time over the next school to retake the classes if the school allows that. It's not too late!
