My Friend had a scan for Hep C and was told this ???

My friend had his first scan to look for any cirrhosis or cancer and was told there is minimal scarring and all other organs look well. The specialist said that he has a slight fatty liver. What can be done about this, is this part of having genotype 2??

"Bi-directional" disorders or diseases are common amongst those with HCV infection. Genotype has nothing to do with who will get fatty liver (NASH) or diabetes or who won't. Genotypes also do not have a preference to all the other side effects of HCV can cause.

HCV genotype 2 a or 2b have a very high response rate to antiviral chemotherapy. Treatment is usually only 6 months.

I was grade and stage 2-1 prior to antiviral chemotherapy, also diagnosed with NASH-my alt and ast levels were always within normal limits (hence the doctor not finding anything for 10 years even though I knew something was wrong due to symtpoms)

Treatment resulted in cutting what little damage I had in half. I am now a 1.1 (last biopsy 2 years ago). I am due again to see my gastro and will ask for another biopsy to see if my liver has comepletely healed (0.0)

Sounds like your friend should give antiviral chemotherapy a try.

The herb milk thistle can also help, but only if the liver is inflammed or alt and ast levels are high. Alt/AST levels that are higher than normal have a higher chance of developing liver cancer cell growth.

Changing the diet levels of protein seem to help. Cutting out fat isn't the only issue in those with fatty liver (nash)-as protein is the hardest to metabolize. Cutting down on both protein and fat is the way to go. Try to cut out all red meats or limit red meat intake to hamburger only-once a week if none at all.

Cut out as much as possible refined as well as artificial sugars. (I still consume two cups of coffee a day with two tsps, sugar). I try to eat fruit instead of candy.

As always, it's best to get the opinion of a doctor, however, I can tell you he will more than likely agree with my statements.

good luck to your friend! treating early rather than late in those with hcv is the way to go. It will give the hcv less time to create more issues where health is concerned.
Reply:It could be due to diet - to many fatty foods - but the doctor should have explained what it meant and what they should do about it.
